Rebecca McClellan has served the 6th Congressional District on the State Board of Education since 2017, and has been a champion for equity and academic growth and achievement for all students. Her service has included a term as the Board Liaison to the Colorado Special Education Advisory Committee, as well as State Board Legislative Liaison. Rebecca has represented the State Board at the National Association of State Boards of Education. Board Member McClellan was selected as a 2017 Gates Fellow to the Harvard Kennedy School of Government program for Senior Leaders in State and Local Government.
As City Council Liaison to schools, she worked with legislators and school leaders to develop and pass measures to improve school funding to help every child learn. Rebecca believes that every child can learn, and that we must support our schools. The McClellan family has lived in the district for more than a decade, with roots in our community and children in public school. A long time volunteer, Rebecca even served as an executive officer of the West Middle School PTCO last year. She brings a parent perspective to a board where that input is lacking.
Rebecca’s experience as Mayor Pro Tem and Councilwoman included experience in economic development. She recognizes that excellent public schools are critical for a healthy economy with high wage jobs. Great schools are also vital as we prepare our children for college or career.
Rebecca McClellan opposes vouchers, unlike her opponent. If elected, Rebecca would be the only public school parent on our State Board of Education. It is supposed to be a citizens’ advisory and oversight board, reflecting citizen perspectives. We must have a current public school parent on our board. Rebecca is an effective and responsive leader who values local citizen input.
Rebecca strongly supported universal preschool and led the way to ensure State Board support for full day kindergarten to expand educational opportunities for our youngest learners.
Rebecca supported implementation of the bipartisan READ Act and worked to support students with dyslexia to strengthen literacy for every student receiving evidence-based literacy instruction.
Rebecca has successfully advocated for proven strategies like high impact tutoring to accelerate academic growth and boost achievement.
Rebecca has worked with legislators and local districts to support the expansion of programs that give students more pathways to success including concurrent enrollment, STEM, Career and Technical Education, and programs like ASCENT, allowing high school students to gain qualifications through community colleges.
