First elected in 2014, Mike Gipson represents the 65th District in the California State Assembly. Since 2016, Gipson has also served as Assembly Democratic Caucus Chair, responsible for driving the legislative decision-making process.
I believe education is the greatest equalizer in our society. That’s why I will continue to fight to improve our neighborhood schools and ensure that Califonrnia’s K-12 public schools have the resources they need to prepare our students for the 21st Century. Additionally, California must re-invest in our world-renowned community colleges and public universities so that they are affordable and accessible to every Californian.
As a former local police officer, I know that ensuring the safety of our families and neighborhoods is of utmost importance. I believe our local law enforcement needs to be supported and I will continue work to provide the necessary resources to tackle crime, in addition to supporting programs that get kids off the streets and combat crime.
While California has made tremendous progress in recent years in closing coverage gaps throughout the state, I believe that California must set an example for the country and guarantee healthcare coverage to everyone. In the Assembly, I will continue to work to address the rising costs of healthcare and fight for a more equitable system.
The cost of living has risen sharply in the past decade, displacing working class families and small businesses while skyrocketing rates of homelessness. I believe we need to continue to invest in affordable housing development, and expand resources for homeless people, including increased funding for shelters, health care and mental health services.
I have worked to protect and conserve our environment by enacting revolutionary green energy programs and supporting cap and trade. Given the Trump Administration’s outright assault on our environment, we must continue to take the future of our environment in our own hands.
Dynamic public transportation infrastructure has a profound impact on the quality of our lives, particularly in working class communities. I’m proud to have fought for transformative public infrastructure in the Assembly, and I will continue to do so.
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, I didn’t just stand by. Women’s rights are under attack by the Supreme Court. That’s why I co-wrote a measure to enshrine abortion rights in California’s constitution. I will always fight for reproductive rights and to protect the right to an abortion.
