Joe was first elected in 2018 to represent Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first African-American elected to serve in Congress in Colorado history. He serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Public Lands and was elected by his peers to the No. 8 position in House Democratic Leadership as the Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.
The right to vote is at the very foundation of our democracy, yet it is under attack like never before. To protect voting rights and ensure voting remains accessible to all, Joe supports the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and H.R. 1 — historic legislation that would make it easier to vote, implement Automatic Voter Registration, and defend every eligible American’s right to cast a ballot. In the House, Joe successfully secured a bipartisan amendment to H.R.1 that would enact nationwide pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds, and he continues to fight for reforms to the dysfunctional Federal Election Commission and protections of our sacred right to vote.
